🍕"Como" vs "ME como" Explained

¡Hola, Reader!

Have you got doubts about when to use comer or comerse?🍕🤔 See an example below:

Normalmente no como dulces, pero ayer me comí un alfajor.

  1. No como dulces = comer
  2. Me comí un alfajor = comerse

What's the reason to use "comerse" instead of "comer"?

Take a look at the amount (of food, in this case) and ask yourself these 2 questions:

  • Is it a specific amount?
  • Is it complete?

While "dulces" doesn't refer to any specific amount of sweets, "un alfajor" refers to one complete unit.

🤓In Spanish, we use the reflexive (comerse, beberse, tomarse, fumarse, comprarse, leerse) when speaking of a specific and complete unit. See more examples:

  • No suelo comprar zapatos, pero el otro día me compré tres pares re bonitos.
  • Generalmente fumo Marlboro, pero el finde pasado me fumé un paquete de Camel.
